Events Testimonial

Andrea Smith
EMEA (Egham, U.K.)
Introduction: Andrea joined Gartner six years ago as an Events Associate and quickly rose through two other positions to reach her current status as Director, EMEA Symposium/ITxpo Programs. A graduate of Royal Holloway, University of London, Andrea is now based in our Egham office.
What do you do in your current position?
I’m part of the program management team for Events, through which I’m responsible for the EMEA Symposium/ITxpos in Cannes and Barcelona. My team is in charge of the event content and programs, so we work with other teams to create programs, enlist external speakers, create sponsor packages and promote the event to our clients and prospective clients.
Is most of your work independent or collaborative?
Events is all about teamwork. There’s a lot I do at my desk, but the real key to making events successful is to work collaboratively with other Events departments and within Gartner as a whole.
What do you like about the people you work with at Gartner?
I like that there are a lot of very intelligent people in the organization. There’s always someone I’m working with who challenges me or helps me learn.
The other thing is the diversity. You’re just as likely to hear people in the canteen speaking a different language as you are to hear English. On my team, for example, I’m the only British person in a group of six that includes two Germans, an Armenian, an Irishman and a Finn.
Have you received support as you’ve moved up through the company?
Yes, definitely. There’s good development management in place, I can talk about what I want, and I’ve been given plenty of opportunities to advance. Events is always growing, so new opportunities constantly come up, and there’s definitely the support within Gartner to move forward and be challenged in new roles.
What’s your favorite part of working at Gartner?
I’ve been able to travel to great places: Rome, Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, Orlando, Boston. The events we run are pretty amazing, and we always have good fun doing them. I especially love the Symposium in Cannes. And they still haven’t sent me to Sydney’s Symposium, but I’m working on it.
What advice would you give a Gartner job applicant?
Be yourself is the most sensible advice I’d give someone. If you’re yourself and you get the job, then you’re probably going to like it and get on with everyone. Let your personality shine through, and be honest.
What do you do for fun?
I like to spend time with friends and family, and I really enjoy performing. I sing with a rock covers band called The Recovery.
